Noises: Clever Girl!

I came across these guys on one of my regular trawls looking for new bands by checking out the ‘friends’ of bands I like on MySpace (This Town Needs Guns in this case).

Clever Girl are a 5 piece instrumental math rock band from the Midlands and the sound they produce is clean, pretty, jazzy, technically proficient and very easy on the ear.

You can download their 4 track E.P. – No Drum and Bass in the Jazz Room – for free from their MySpace page and I’d seriously recommend it:

Good: What is Christmas?

A common question we all hear at this time of year is ‘Are you feeling Christmassy?’

Well, Christmas is defined by many different things for many different people.

Some people feel christmassy when they see the first few flakes of snow. For others it’s a fat turkey with all the trimmings. Others are filled with Christmas spirit in front of a warm open fire. Perhaps the smell of chestnuts roasting on a street vendor’s stall is more your thing or fat homeless looking men in red dressing gowns.

I was out doing some last-minute christmas shopping after work tonight and it suddenly occurred to me that none of those things define Christmas for me.

For me, I know it’s christmas when I see this:

The annual (obviously) Cliff Richard Calendar.

Sadly that picture is a bit blurry, probably because my hand was trembling as I had my epiphany AND because I wasn’t entirely sure if taking photos of products in shops is legal/frowned upon/just weird.

Here’s a closer look at some of these phenomenal pictures:

In the third one down he looks like he’s actually mental in the head and waiting for someone to dress him and/or wipe his chin.

Stupid virgin.

Anyway now that I have seen the 2011 Cliff Richard Calendar in the shops I am hofficially (sorry) feeling Christmassy.

Noises: Minnaars; because Foals lost their edge

If you, like me, were a bit let down by Foals‘ most recent offering ‘Total Life Forever’ because it sounds like a different band to the one which recorded ‘Antidotes’ then don’t worry…there’s Minnaars.

These guys rose from the ashes of Foals’ label mates Tired Irie and fill the niche which Foals re-opened when they lost their more intricate mathiness and opted for a slowed down, remix-friendly sound.

I’m not slagging off Foals by the way, I still like them a lot but i liked them a lot more when they were a bit different and now…well…they’re not 😦

Anyhoo! Check out Minnaars folks:

Good: this particular soulful house, funk and soul monthly

That soulful house, funk and soul night I went to last week was OK but I felt that no one was really taking it seriously and everyone was a bit spaced out and unfriendly…

…wait a minute, what’s this?!

Thank god! The most sincere and intimate soulful house, funk and soul monthly in London! Finally!

Bad: Bears Playing Hockey

Not only are these real-life bears and not men dressed as bears but it’s happening in what looks like  a legitimate ice hockey stadium (or arena? Is it stadium? Does it matter?).

When I saw the title I thought it might be one bear slipping about on a small block of ice, chained up by the nose down some soviet back alley but there’s like a thousand people there?!

Is it a national team? Is there a bear league? If there isn’t a bear league and this isn’t just a bunch of incredibly confused animals aimlessly flailing sticks about then why is there a referee!?

Good: MagicBoy on Daybreak!

At the risk of it beginning to seem like literally nothing goes on in my life so I have to live it through other peoples’ far more interesting lives…another post about my mate Ben.

Not only has he found another celebrity this week:

BUT I just flicked on ITV1 (not to watch Daybreak out of choice obviously but because I was told he would be on it) and who do I see turning Coke into orange Juice like a modern-day Jesus Christ whilst charming the knickers off Christine Bleakely (also like modern-day Jesus Christ might)?:

It’s only Ben bloody Hanlin!

I can’t wait to see him cure a leper on The Jeremy Kyle Show.

Well done (again) mate 🙂

Good: MagicBoyTV

MagicBoyTV is a YouTube channel set up by a very good friend of mine, Mr. Ben Hanlin.

Not only is he a good friend he is also someone I have a huge amount of respect for because one day he decided to do what a lot of us would probably love to do if we had the guts/motivation/self belief required to do it. He threw up a big middle finger to his 9 to 5 office job and set out to turn his hobby (magic) into a career.

He recently conducted  social media experiment to use Facebook and Twitter to find a celebrity, picked at random, and perform a trick to them within 3 days.

I’ll let the video do the talking but remember as you watch this that Ben Hanlin is not just another magician, he’s someone who, rather than sitting on his arse thinking ‘how cool would it be if I did that?!’, is actually out there doing it and I for one find that very inspiring.

Well done mate 🙂

Bad: The most antisocial excercise I’ve ever seen!

It can be pretty embarrassing going to the gym, especially if you’re a first timer milling about by the machines wondering how the hell they work but not wanting to try them out in case you get it wrong and look like an idiot.

So why not try this incredibly easy exercise I found in a fitness magazine today which won’t make you look absolutely mental:

Yeaaaa just hurl a heavily weighted, non-bouncy ball at the floor and try to ignore the funny looks.
